Franco Mannino
Franco Mannino (1924–2005) was an acclaimed Italian film composer, pianist, opera director, playwright, and novelist. Known for his prolific output, Mannino composed over 440 concert pieces and more than 100 film scores during his career.
Early life and career
Early start: Born in Palermo, Italy, on April 25, 1924, Mannino began his career as a pianist, making his debut at age 16. He later studied composition and piano at the Rome Conservatory.
Multifaceted artist: While primarily a composer, his talents extended to writing novels and plays, and directing operas.
Film score collaboration with Luchino Visconti
Frequent collaborator: Mannino worked closely with famed Italian director Luchino Visconti on several films and theatrical productions.

Conversation Piece (1974)
The Innocent (1976), for which he won a David di Donatello award.
Theater: He also collaborated with Visconti on other projects, such as directing the 1956 ballet Mario e il Mago and providing the libretto for Mannino's 1963 opera, Il diavolo in giardino.
Work with the National Arts Centre Orchestra
Conductor: In addition to his composing, Mannino was a respected conductor. He was the principal conductor and artistic advisor for Canada's National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa from 1982 to 1986.
Guest conductor: He returned to the orchestra as principal guest conductor from 1986 to 1989.
Death
Franco Mannino died in Rome on February 1, 2005, at the age of 80 due to complications from surgery.
